Med en spansk far och en finlandssvensk mor kom hon att växa upp tvåspråkig och mellan väldigt olika kulturer. Redan från spädbarnstiden reste hon runt i Europa och Nordafrika med familjen vilket lärde henne att betrakta mångfald och olikheter som det enda naturliga. Vart hon än kommer söker hon den gemensamma nämnaren.
María har skolat sig till berättare, sedan 2007, främst vid The International School of Storytelling, och huvudsakligen i Sydafrika. Hennes specialintresse är berättarens roll i samhället och som storyteller har hon uppträtt på de mest varierande platser (gator, festivalscener, skolor, kåkstäder, bibliotek, privata tillställningar…) ända från Kapstaden till Tenala i Västnyland -med mellanlandningar i Spanien, Frankrike, UK, Danmark mm. Hon har en interkulturell repertoar och berättar folksagor, myter, biografiska berättelser, författarberättelser och stundens improviserade sagor. I de ögonblicken kommer hon till sin fulla rätt som närvarande ordkonstnär.
María Serrano är viceordförande för ALBA SuomiFinland och medlem i Tellers Without Borders styrgrupp. År 2019 är hon konstnärlig ledare för ALBA och Hangö Stads festival Seaside Stories, Hangö 14-17 november.

María Serrano (Finland/Spain) is a multilingual
professional storyteller, chairperson of ALBA SuomiFinland (in the
Nordic Alliance for Healing Storytelling) and an active member
of Tellers Without Border’s core group.
She runs workshops and
performs in Swedish, Spanish and English. Her repertoire includes traditional-,
true-life- and improvised stories, the latter at which she’s
particularly comfortable and adept. As a storyteller she has
mainly trained in South Africa with the International School
of Storytelling. She performs in a variety of settings -from schools
and libraries to stages and streets, in several countries. Because of her background she has a passion for creating
spaces where different cultures can meet.
María was born in 1967
to a Spanish photographer and a Swedish-speaking actress
from Finland. Reared in Spain and Finland, she also
travelled all over Europe (East and West) and North Africa as a
child. She grew up among the community of Chilean refugees and
is currently working with newly arrived refugees in her
community in Finland.
María has also worked extensively as a
conference interpreter and trained as a class teacher. She is
married and a mother of four. Maria is vice chair of ALBA SuomiFinland and a member of Tellers Without Borders’ core group. She is also the artistic director of Seaside Stories Festival, in Hanko November 14th-17th 2019 organised by ALBA and the City of Hanko
