Spring Workshop: From Darkness to Light - The Birth of Story

From Darkness to Light - The Birth of story

Dear friends of stories and Alba,

Our spring workshop, is organised again in co-operation with Nylands Svenska Ungdomsförbund! This time the workshop is given by Carla-Rose Häkkinen, member of Alba board. You are most heartily welcome to join this day spent exploring creativity and storytelling. Do invite you friends as well!

In the storytelling workshop ”From darkness to light: the birth of story” we will create a story together and work on it, going through the first stages of the creative process. The story will be unique to this moment and group of people. We will do exercises that activate creativity and give structure to the new-born story, for example simple movement exercises, drawing and creative writing.

The aim of the workshop is to provide a space and some tools for making a story of your own and giving shape and richness to it. We will embark on a shared journey of discovery and finally present the fruits of our work as a draft version of the story.

The workshop is meant for anyone interested in storytelling and aims to offer tools to both beginners and more experienced storytellers. The language of tuition is English. Other languages can also be used as needed.

Prices: 50 € Alba members, 70 € others. Includes soup, tea/coffee. Reduced fees are possible, get in touch. Registrations by e-mail to albasuomifinland@gmail.com by 11 March.

Board meeting - June 2017

Alba Suomi-Finland conducted a board meeting on the 7th of June in Espoo. The gathering happened on a sunny afternoon and it was hosted at the beautiful home of the vice chair Nena Stenius. Other participants in the meeting were the chair María Serrano, the treasurer Carla-Rose Häkkinen and the deputy members Camilla Cedercreutz-Bäck and Paulo de Tarso Silva.  The deputy member Rita Kreivi and the secretary Margherita Zilliacus were not able to attend.

After having a warm meal and sharing stories in a cozy environment, the meeting was transferred to the garden and over coffee (and rhubarb pie) the group initiated the discussions
Before addressing the major topics of the meeting, the group had an activity led by Paulo de Tarso Silva. The aim of the activity was to identify visual metaphors that represent the collective identity  of ALBA and its evolving purpose as a community. The group drew images that symbolised ALBA´s essence and together they identified common themes. As a result, the three major themes identified by the group were:
  1. ALBA is an organisation that works with storytelling as a healing art, bridging the commonalities of the human essence.
  2. ALBA values the ancient wisdom carried in traditional tales, passed on through narratives.
  3. ALBA welcomes the idea of exchange of perspectives through story sharing encounters and community engagement.
With that mindset, the board meeting carried on with other discussions. The topics discussed by the group were:
  • The outcome of the ALBA Nordic meeting in Copenhagen in may 2017.
Finland was represented by María Serrano and Carla Rose. Please read more in the blog posts:
There was a Nordic ALBA meeting in Copenhagen in May
Nordic storytelling evening in Copenhagen
  • The Federation for European storytelling Conference (FEST) that happened in June 2017 in Ireland.
Alba Suomi-Finland was represented by María Serrano and Nena Stenius.  (More information coming later).
  •  Upcoming activities and collaborations
Stories Under the Tree, which was a popular daily event initiated in the symposium Tree of Life in Karjaa 2014 (with a couple of follow-ups indoors in Helsinki in Autumn 2014), will continue again in the upcoming autumn (2017).
As a pilot idea, the concept "Stories Under the Tree" will happen already in the summer (outdoors):                     ⬇⬇
The event entitled Stories Under the Tree Picnic will take place on Friday, the 14th of July (from 16:00 to 19:00) at Kaivopuisto in Helsinki. The event is free of charge and open to all. Please find more information and the directions on ALBA´s event on Facebook.
ALBA Suomi-Finland will also continue the cooperation with Story Sharing Universum and several "Story Sharing Cafés" will be arranged in the autumn in Helsinki area. Please follow Story Sharing Universum on Facebook for updates.
In addition, the board discussed the possibility of ALBA conducting a workshop in collaboration with Metaphora Consultancy. The potential workshop would explore the talents of the storytelling community in the social context of work. The target audience for the workshop would be storytellers and people that work with any type of social interactions. (A proposal will be discussed among the collaborative parties and shared in the near future).
  •  ALBA members´stories and language

Nordic storytelling evening in Copenhagen

On May 12th, Alba members participated in the Nordic storytelling evening in Copenhagen.

We had both fairy tales and personal stories in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and English - with a hint of Russian and much of Greenland!

In Liv Knudsen’s words:

The Storytelling café friday night was held in a Waldorf kindergarden which nurished the warm and magical atmosphere of the evening.
Great stories were shared, and as a perfect closing of the evening, Simon Simonsen ( Albamember ) rose from his "visitor chair" and told one of his own funny stories.

CARLA-ROSE HÄKKINEN conducted a workshop on the 13th of May in Copenhagen.

The workshop entitled "DEVISING A TALE - Co-creating a Story Performance" was much appreciated in by the participants.

Some reviews are found here:

Carla-Rose is, for me to see, a very skilled storyteller. She is inspired by different sources, and juggles with a colourful palette of tools in order to work with a story and making us - the participants - able to tell the story "by heart" - here meaning to make the story come alive within and then give a deep touch of personal expression when sharing it with an audience.
She is, I think, a very caring, patient, playful and humoristic instructor. She works in a creative, intuitive and impulsive way. At the same, time you don´t doubt that she is doing "serious business"; holds the overview and has a clear goal ahead.
We were working with a fairly dramatic fairytale of H.C Andersen in two groups. One group was going to dramatise the story using movement and words. The other group, moves, rythm and sounds. I enjoyed very much being in the wordless group; it was very moving and touched me deeply.
To watch the other group was also some of an experience! It was so beautiful and incredibly funny. The themes of the story, I recognized, were mirroring themes of my personal life, and that has helped me a step further on the adventurous journey to understanding myself and the fact of being human.
Thank you sincerly, Carla-Rose, for giving a magical and inspiring workshop/ playroom!
Love from Liv,

Carla-Rose led us through the workshop in a playful, safe and humble way and gave us a great variety of exercises.
In a few hours’ time, we went on a long journey and experienced a story coming to life.
Once again I was amazed by the power of a touching story. A key question and a group of caring people trigged my imagination. New words and images came into being, bringing hope and joy.
Love, Linda

There was a Nordic ALBA meeting in Copenhagen in May

Presence, enthusiasm, creativity and wisdom where indeed some of the words that defined ALBA’s Nordic  meeting in Copenhagen, where storytellers from the boards in  Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark once again got together to discuss our work with Healing Storytelling, common and national projects that weave together this shared impulse.

Having the opportunity to meet like this, to spend a few intense days together is one of the most inspiring and revitalising parts of ALBA work. These are moments of true meetings and regeneration. Moments of awe and wonder, and much work!

ALBA SuomiFinland was represented by Carla-Rose Häkkinen and María Serrano.

I find that each time I go to an ALBA meeting,

I stop
I stand
I look
and I listen.

And for a fraction I can really see where I am, and take it in, it is like a snapshot of ALBA experiences, those physical places that beautifully hold us. Images of the mountains in Norway pop up, an old wall in Copenhagen, a snowstorm building up outside a wooden house in Finland, the richness of summer in the same garden a few months later… the tiny island in the park in Karjaa, close to our international symposium Three of Life in 2014.

It is becoming a tradition to have a Nordic guest running a workshop in the host country, and to celebrate a Nordic storytelling evening -both open to wider audiences.

This time Carla-Rose Häkkinen from ALBA Suomi-Finland ran a much appreciated workshop in a beautiful attic in Christianshavn in Copenhagen. She took us on a shared adventure with one of HC Andersen’s challenging stories:  De røde sko, The Red Shoes.

I trust her workshop DEVISING A TALE- Co-creating a Story Performance will reach more people in the future!

If Healing Storytelling is something you would like to see more of, do join us! Please support ALBA with your membership and  ideas.
